Lookout Mountain
Glen Falls Trail
Old CCC stonework switchbacks down to a seasonal falls. Best in the week after a good rain, quiet almost any weekday.
Hiking · Lookout Mountain
Sunset Rock earns its name honestly. The trail is short but front-loads its climb, switchbacking up through hardwoods before the trees drop away and the whole Tennessee River valley opens up beneath a broad sandstone ledge.
It's a favourite for a reason, which means it gets busy on clear evenings — arrive an hour before sundown to claim a spot on the rock. The wind funnels straight up the gorge here, so bring a layer even in summer.
The same crag is a historic climbing area; you'll often see ropes rigged below the overlook. Keep dogs leashed near the edge, and pack out everything you bring in.

North Shore
The city's closest real trail network — a wooded loop with a skyline overlook you can reach on a lunch break.
Signal Mountain
A rocky out-and-back along the gorge rim on the Cumberland Trail. Exposed sections, big payoff, no shade at midday.
